Do we find things like murder, rape and stealing reprehensible only because we are taught that they are?

Nope. Children instinctively have morals they weren't directly taught. This is well studied. So do monkeys and apes. There's a "fairness instinct." Humans have inborn empathy and mirror neurons. Culture develops it, but it's present in everyone not a brain damaged and/or sociopath.
