Why do we specifically love people who hurt us?

I read a quote in a Chuck Palaniuk book that was along the lines of "Every torture slave is in secret romance with their master" referring to how people tend to adore the individuals that hurt them, and I don't mean how pain inherently comes with love. The boy in the book had convinced himself that he had strong homosexual feelings for another boy who raped him. Is this true? Whats the psychology behind this? Where can I read more about it?
