Why are there so many more angry, intolerant, self-righteous atheists on the Internet than in real life?

intellectually militant atheists seem to believe it's acceptable to attack Christians and theists more viciously on the Internet (an inherently hypocritical habit) than in real life, why is this? Cowardice perhaps?
